Philips develops new warm white LED lights that match human preferences
Recently, the research team from the Netherlands discovered an innovative way to make LED light more warm and comfortable. They are HugoCornelissen, chief scientist of the Royal Philips Optical Research Department in the Netherlands, and his colleagues. The research team used new materials to wrap LEDs to deliver warm, comfortable white light, and published papers in the Optical Society of the American Optical Society (OSA). According to Cornelissen, incandescent lamps usually show a warm color when the light is dimmed. According to the laws of the human body, when the light is dimmed, people generally prefer red light. LED lights generally do not change color as the light intensity changes. There have been research teams trying to use colorful LEDs and control circuits to make LED lights turn red as power gets smaller. But this method also has its drawbacks: multiple components increase the cost of the fixture and the risk of damage, and the mixed light from multiple LEDs can cause color shading. The research team's approach is completely different. They apply textile materials or transparent materials on the LED surface, and the color of the light changes. They first started experimenting with cool white LEDs, because white LEDs are made of blue LEDs plus phosphors, and some of the blue light is absorbed by the phosphors to emit light of other colors, and the two light rays are mixed into white light. They believe that if the blue light absorbed by the phosphor becomes more, the mixed white light will become warmer, and what they do is to use innovative methods to achieve this transformation. The researchers made a coating of a mixture of liquid crystals and polymer materials. This mixture typically scatters light, but when the temperature reaches above 48 ° C, the liquid crystal molecules will rearrange and the coating of the mixture will become transparent. The mixture is coated with the LED and the power is increased. The temperature rise causes the coating to become transparent, and the LED emits cool white light. When the power is reduced, the coating molecules recombine into a scattering material, which will bounce more blue light. Into the phosphor, the LED will emit warmer warm white light. The scientists fine-tuned the LED design and used a variety of phosphors to make the light meet industry lighting standards. Cornelissen said: This LED light may have to wait until two years later, after all, we need time to prove its reliability, which is very important. The research team believes that this new type of LED lamp can accelerate the recognition and acceptance of LED technology, especially in the home lighting and hotel lighting market, which is more demanding for comfortable and warm light.
