The adverse effects of soil compaction on soil nutrient properties

Human activities have a great influence on soil properties. In urban development, it is often necessary to trim and compact the soil. Will this treatment result in adverse effects on soil properties, soil nutrients, and soil respiration? How can we avoid this kind of soil deterioration caused by human activities? Today we use a soil tester to measure the soil before and after compaction, with the aim of providing some suggestions for urban soil management.

Due to the effect of compaction, the physical and chemical properties of the soil changed significantly, with structural damage, bulk density and hardness increasing, porosity and permeability decreasing. Soil pH increases, organic matter content decreases, soil temperature, soil microorganisms, etc. change.

At present, there are differences in the standards for measuring soil compaction intensity. Some people use soil permeability and soil bulk density, and others use porosity to reflect soil compaction intensity, but lack a more standardized and unified measurement method.

The theoretical and methodological research on the effect of soil compaction on tree growth is still in the preliminary stage. At present, the impact of soil compaction disturbance on plants is mainly on the trees in crops and natural ecosystems, and there is a lack of systematic research and analysis. A small number of pot experiments were also conducted to study the effects of soil compaction on seedling growth and microbial activity. Jordon et al. found that potted seedlings of potted eucalyptus pot plants have reduced height and dry matter growth and reduced their ability to absorb nitrogen.

The scope of soil compaction research mainly focuses on the impact of logging, cultivation and other methods on forest land and agricultural land. However, there are few studies on the impact of soil compaction on plant growth caused by mechanical compaction and human trampling in cities. The latter mainly focuses on the degree of compaction of soils covered by different vegetation cover types in cities, such as the average total porosity of the roadside trees in Hong Kong, and the bulk density of topsoil in large parks in Washington, DC and New York. Philip et al. studied the tolerance of the main street trees in Malaysia to soil compaction. James studies found that trampling causes the length of branches of street trees to be less than the same age, but the amount of growth does not necessarily decrease. There is only one report on the impact of soil compaction on woody plants in China.

The study on the effects of soil compaction on the growth of urban afforestation plants is conducive to more scientific and rational selection and management of urban afforestation tree species, thereby building an ecologically safe urban human settlement environment.
