Bayer ship surface carbon nanotube-based coating energy saving and environmental protection

Solutions to addressing challenges are critical to a world-sustainable future that relies heavily on a variety of forms of transport, such as land, sea and air. Bayer MaterialScience has developed a range of innovative solutions for many of these challenges.

For example, a large proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the transportation sector, ranking third among emissions sources.

Ships spend a lot of energy on global voyages, transporting goods and raw materials, and more than 95% rely on chemically active agents to remove dirt and crustaceans that breed at the bottom of the hull. The problem is that highly toxic chemicals used to remove dirt can cause pollution to the ocean.

By applying carbon nanotube-based paints and coatings to the surface of the ship, crustaceans cannot grasp the bottom of the hull, and the ship can remain completely clean throughout the life of the paint. The amount of fuel required can also be reduced by 17% compared to a fouled ship.
