Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturers Actively Deploy MEMS

In view of the development of the MEMS industry in 2010, Hu Qingjian, vice chairman and chief executive of Taiwan Semiconductor Microelectronics Research and Technology Co., Ltd., believes that compared to the entire semiconductor industry, the annual output value is about 200 billion US dollars. Only about 7 billion US dollars, compared to the scale of MEMS is still small.

But even so, semiconductor giants such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and UMC have also actively deployed. However, because MEMS technology is difficult to standardize, there is still a technical challenge in the wafer end, and packaging and testing is also a major issue.

Hu Qingjian said that judging from the current MEMS industry, it is not difficult to find that only the leading players in the MEMS industry are leading the entire market, which is more than the IDM, which is mainly due to technical problems. Most MEMS manufacturers are conducting package testing on their own.

Insights has been invested in the MEMS industry for more than 10 years, originally under the Huaxin Lihua Group, and was independent in 2004. As of now, the total investment has exceeded 3 billion US dollars. At present, the company is mainly based on 8 wafer fabs, and only a small portion of 6-inch capacity is reserved.

More than 90% of the customers in the survey are still foreigners. Recently, Probing has also actively cooperated with the Taiwanese-related IC industry to develop new customers. Hu Qingjian pointed out that in the past, the number of Taiwan-based IC design companies was relatively small, and as the company strives to promote it, it will continue to see results in the future. It is expected that RF MEMS products will have great potential.

With the increase in consumer electronics market demand, it will be a positive force, driving MEMS IC design industry willing to invest. However, Hu Qingjian pointed out that in the application of consumer electronics products, the cost performance will gradually emerge, so for products such as gravity sensors (G-sensor), there will still be room for bargaining, until the acceptable range of consumers.
