Gas launches the first natural gas powered engine for the first passenger ship in Spain
Together, the two companies installed a natural gas-assisted engine and a 30-cubic-meter LNG fuel tank on the Baleà ria “Abel Matutes†ferry. The new gas engine is fully integrated with the ship's power system and can operate with any other auxiliary machine without any visual impact. The ferry will use natural gas as fuel when entering and leaving the port. The ferry is 190 meters long and can carry 900 passengers and load 2235 meters of wheeled cargo.
Â
With natural gas auxiliary technology, the polluting emissions of the ferry will be reduced, reducing nearly 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide, more than 60 tons of nitrogen oxides and 6 tons of sulphur oxide emissions each year.
Â
Adolfo Utor, chairman of Baleà ria, said that the project was the result of the company's strategic decision to build three smart ships, all powered by LNG fuel. Daniel López Jordà , general manager of Gas Natural Fenosa's retail business, also pointed out that natural gas will be a core in the future of transportation.
