The Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group purchased a total of four modular BALPURE BP-5000 systems, one for each 172,000 dwt LNG carrier. Each BALPURE system handles ballast water flow rates up to 5,000 cubic meters per hour. The first BALPURE system for these vessels will be installed in August 2012 and the final one will be installed by the end of 2013.
BALPURE continues to be the technology of choice for its treatment, size adjustment and ease of installation and maintenance.
The BALPURE system, which utilizes electrolytic disinfection technology, is a convenient and economical ballast water treatment solution for LNG/LPG carriers. BALPURE's turbulent treatment method uses 1% of the total ballast water flow to produce a sodium hypochlorite disinfection solution that can be remotely installed away from the main ballast water line. Compared to similar technologies, the BALPURE turbulent treatment method and the design that only needs to be processed during the rise of the ballast cycle greatly reduces power consumption, thus ensuring low operating costs. BALPURE uses a proprietary self-cleaning electrode that eliminates the hassle of crew members spending a lot of time on chemical and mechanical maintenance, resulting in a truly maintenance-free ballast water treatment.
"We believe that the Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group's order indicates that the leading shipping companies, Mitsui Co., Ltd. and ExxonMobil, have affirmed BALPURE technology," said Jim McGillivray, general manager of BALPURE at Severn Trent De Nora. “As the Ballast Water Management Convention is getting closer, owners and operators have begun to determine the final candidate list for the preferred ballast water treatment solution. STS receives order for ballast water treatment system
