The road to struggle

In early 2017, Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg began discussions on the establishment of the C919 assembly line in Changsha, China, and planned the line action map. In the second half of the year, Liebherr personnel and the joint venture team discussed the C919 assembly line several times. The C919's tooling and fixtures began to be in place in early 2018.

In order to meet the requirements of China Commercial Aircraft's C919 flight test maintenance process, Liebherr decided to start repair work for the front landing gear of the C919 AC101 aircraft in Changsha, China (code TA09 TA10). The joint venture team made the site, tooling, During the preparations for chemicals, parts and components, the two teams conducted several rounds of meetings on procurement, logistics, process technology, production preparation, import and export filing, establishing checklists, identifying plans and implementing them.

In April 2018, the C919 AC101 mission was officially launched within the joint venture company. In May, representatives of China Commercial Aircraft and CAAC Bureau came to Changsha to conduct on-site witness audits. The joint venture company also participated in this audit activity. After many communication and review, AC101 successfully completed and passed the inspection of authorized representative of CAAC Bureau. The successful completion of the TA mission marked the condition that the joint venture company had the assembly of the late C919 AC series landing gear.

Obtain airworthiness approval

At the beginning of July 2018, the C919 AC104 material was gradually put in place. The Liebherr technology, quality and assembly team arrived at the joint venture company. The two parties began to assemble the AC104 front and main landing gear.

The following month, COMAC and CAAC Bureau auditors conducted a conformity inspection of the assembly process of the C919 AC104 in the joint venture company and witnessed the filling and testing process.

In September 2018, the Shanghai Airworthiness Certification Center DMIR conducted a manufacturing conformity check on the AC104 after the final inspection, and issued an approval release certificate/airworthiness approval label. They took only three months from the end of the C919 AC101 maintenance test to the completion of the AC104 assembly.

The delivery of the first piece of the domestic C919 aircraft landing gear is a milestone, which indicates that Liebherr China Aviation has successfully opened the assembly test production line of the domestic C919 aircraft landing gear after successfully delivering the ARJ21, and developed into the next stage for the Chinese business.
